Keynote Title From Road Perception to Smart Vehicular Intelligence: AI-Based Visual Scene Understanding and Applications

Abstract

Road environment recognition is essential for intelligent transportation systems, advanced driver-assistance systems, autonomous driving, traffic safety, and smart vehicular applications. Real-world road scenes are complex because traffic signs may be small or damaged, road markings may be degraded, road surfaces may contain cracks or potholes, and nighttime conditions may reduce visibility. This keynote speech presents AI-based visual scene understanding methods for road environment recognition. It introduces deep learning and computer vision approaches for traffic sign recognition, road marking detection, road damage analysis, road intersection detection, license plate recognition, and image-based road scene interpretation. YOLO-based detection models, spatial pyramid pooling, image enhancement, GAN-based data generation, and explainable AI are discussed as key techniques for improving accuracy, robustness, and interpretability. The talk also shares practical research outcomes from Taiwan road environment recognition and discusses future directions, including edge AI, real-time perception, trustworthy AI, multimodal sensing, and smart vehicular intelligence. The goal is to move from object detection toward comprehensive visual scene understanding for safer and more sustainable transportation systems.
